1/6/2024 0 Comments Shoebill next to person![]() We have the option to spend some time with Eastern (Mountain) Gorillas on this tour. The latter part of this tour is good for a host of more widespread African birds, Lion, with some luck Leopard, White Rhinoceros, and fabulous sites such as Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile is forced through a narrow gap. Shoebill is one of the most sought-after birds in the world, and is one of our special targets on this tour! Other highlights of our Uganda birding tour are a great many primates such as Uganda Red Colobus, Guereza, Eastern (Mountain ) Gorilla, and Chimpanzee, not to mention the spectacular scenery, including such famous places as Lake Victoria (the continent’s largest lake), Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, and last but not least the Virunga Mountains. Ross’s Turaco, Great Blue Turaco (almost twice the size of other turacos), and various other birds are virtually garden birds here in Uganda, “the Pearl of Africa”. We also look for other range-restricted birds, such as Red-faced Barbet that is also found in a remote part of Tanzania excluded from most birding tours to that country. We have not yet missed Green-breasted Pitta on any of our trips – Uganda has become the classic country for finding this otherwise very difficult bird. Over 20 Albertine (Western) Rift endemics are also sought, including one of Africa’s most fabulous turacos, Rwenzori Turaco, and of course the “must-see” Grauer’s (African Green) Broadbill. This Uganda birding and mammal extravaganza allows you to find the most important birds and primates that Uganda has to offer. With these updates, sixteen species are now represented, and six species plus Hamerkop are have 5 or more holders. While the Hamerkop and Shoebill are now considered closer to pelicans, since both are sometimes called storks and used to be considered closer to them, I have included them here. I suspect this number may rise with more information. I expect this list is incomplete, and information on both holders and numbers are gladly welcomed.Ĭurrently only five of the fifteen species (and Hamerkop) are held at more than 5 institutions, according to what I've found. I have only used information pertaining within the last 3 years, to hopefully be as current as possible. Using zoo websites and searching Zoochat, I have put together as best I can a list of where each species is currently displayed or housed. At least fifteen species of stork, plus both the Hamerkop and Shoebill are publicly displayed in North America. ![]() Big and bold though sometimes ugly, the storks tend to be a fairly common group in zoos.
